Bruce R. Kowalski Dr.
Bruce R. Kowalski, 70, of Hesperus died Saturday, December 1, 2012, from a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma.
Born March 7, 1942, Bruce was a professor of chemistry at the University of Washington before his retirement. An analytical chemist, Bruce was a pioneer in the field of chemometrics. As an educator, he touched the lives of many of his colleagues and students.
After he retired, Bruce joined the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department where his specialty was HazMat. Bruce and his beloved companion, Chaco-Bob, were involved with canine search and rescue.
His work with the Fort Lewis Mesa Fire Department, Durango Fire and Rescue and canine search and rescue was among his proudest accomplishments.
He was married to Sandy Togerson on June 28, 1974, in Seattle, Wash. Bruce is survived by his wife, Sandy; his daughter, Jennifer of Hesperus; son Gregory of New York City; his brother Craig in Hong Kong; sister Cindy in Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bruce was preceded in death by his parents.
A loving husband and dad; a generous and humorous friend, Bruce was an explorer in everything he undertook. He will be missed by all.
