Obituary for
Dora I. Klein
Dora Ida Klein, mother of Dorothy M. Agnello of Durango, Colo., and William C. Klein of Springfield, Ore., died Friday, January 13, 2012, in Cortez, Colo. She was 102.
Mrs. Klein was born January 1, 1910, in Hamburg, Germany, the daughter of Fredrick and Alma Wedemeyer. She immigrated to the United States in 1927 on the Albert Ballin-Hamburg Line to Queens, N.Y., with her Uncle Julius, who was a tailor on the ship, and her brother, Edward Wedemeyer (now deceased).
Dora learned the English language, and became an American citizen in 1936. She married Charles R. Klein that same year. She became a foster mother before having two children of her own. During the 1940s she became a mother to William (Bill) and five years later to Dorothy (Dottie). In the 1950s she was a scout leader for Cub Scouts and Brownies in the Trinity Lutheran Church of Alden Terrace, N.Y., where she also sang in the choir.
In the 1950’s, she moved to Vermont, where she was involved with the Congregational Church Women's Association. She became a Girl Scout leader and grew an organic garden and raised chickens.
In 1970 Dora and Charlie retired to Casa Loma Park in Bradenton, Fla. They were both very involved in the park's many activities. Dora had many hobbies; she was a wonderful seamstress, and enjoyed biking and swimming every day in Florida. When Charlie died in 1984, Dora was left with a nice new car in the driveway and a driver’s license she had renewed very year, but had never used. So at the age of 74 she took hold of the steering wheel, and she continued to drive until she was 92 years old.
She enjoyed traveling in the 1980s and ‘90s. She had been living at Vista Mesa Assisted Living in Cortez for the past 2 1/2 years at the time of her death.
Dora was blessed with three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and several nieces and nephews. She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.
Cremation has occurred in Durango. Her ashes will be placed in Tully, N.Y., during a Celebration of Life planned for this summer.
