Obituary for
Stephen P. Kinsella
Stephen Patrick Kinsella, age 34, died Saturday, April 7, 2012, in his home in Durango, Colo.
Patrick was born on July 4, 1977, and his parents were Stephen and Angela Kinsella of St. Louis, Missouri. Growing up, Patrick developed a love of music and all that is creative and artistic. He lived later moved to Glendale, a suburb of Kirkwood. He lived there from 2007 until 2010, when he moved to Durango.
As an adult, Patrick was passionate about caring for those in need. He was an active volunteer for St. Louis Effort for AIDS, working in the testing and counseling department. He then became employed for six years at Catholic Charities Housing Resource Center in a variety of capacities, primarily as a mobile outreach worker who spent his days finding those individuals who were homeless and in need of services. He later worked in the housing department helping to assess needed home repairs, which gave him the chance to utilize his “handyman” skills. The people Patrick and his coworkers connected with were often overlooked and ignored by others in downtown St. Louis, but Patrick had a rare gift for meeting people where they were at and helping those individuals begin to trust service providers. As a coworker and colleague, it was evident that Patrick was intelligent, passionate, caring, and always looking for an opportunity to play practical jokes on anyone he could find.
The greatest loves of Patrick’s life were his wife Breeah and his two daughters, Chloe, age 15, and Lily, age 3. Patrick was a playful father who enjoyed chasing and wrestling (and often infuriating) Chloe as well as showing Lily how to play a child-sized guitar and how to run after their two beloved dogs, Seamus and Lucy. Patrick always wanted the best for his daughters and was proud of the young women that they are becoming.
Patrick had a love of the outdoors, primarily camping, hiking, and off-roading in any vehicle with four wheels that was capable of driving over large boulders. Patrick was most at peace when he was in nature and had many incredible experiences in some of the world’s most beautiful places. It was this love of God’s creation that led Patrick to move to Durango, Colo., in the fall of 2010 to live in a town surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Patrick had an insatiable desire for exploration and adventure and will always be remembered by his family and friends when we see something beautiful outdoors.
Patrick also had a deep faith in Jesus. He was raised in the Catholic Church and later became an active member, along with his family, of Vineyard Community Church in St. Louis, Mo., in the fall of 2007. At the Vineyard, Patrick found a community that loved and welcomed him while giving him an opportunity to cultivate his relationship with God. Patrick made a public commitment to follow Jesus with his baptism in the summer of 2009. Patrick knew that God loved him and that part of God’s design in his life was to seek justice for those in need. In Durango, Patrick attended The River Church and was able to go on a life-changing mission trip to Uganda in 2010 where he saw God’s Kingdom moving powerfully in his own life as well as the lives of those he was serving. The children there were also fascinated by his “colorful”
arms.
Patrick was a good friend who was always willing to help those around him, whether by repairing someone’s car, fixing something that was broken, or by listening.
Patrick is survived by his wife, Breeah Kinsella, of Durango; his daughter Chloe Kinsella, of St. Louis, Mo.; his daughter Lily Kinsella, of Durango; his special friend Caroline Shore, of Durango; his uncle and aunt, Terry and Mary Wittenberg, of St. Louis, Mo.; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Patrick was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Angela
Kinsella.
A memorial service to honor Patrick’s life is planned for Monday, April 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at The River Church in Durango, Colo. All are welcome.
