Obituary for
David S. Johns
David S. Johns died Sunday, December 25, 2011, in Durango, Colo. He was 94.
Mr. Johns was born June 15, 1917, in Baltimore, Md., son of Arthur and Emily Staufenbiel Johns. He graduated from Penn State in 1940 with a degree in forestry. He was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve. He married Porrena Mae Warden December 15, 1941.
He moved to Durango in 1975. He worked for the Forest Service for more than 30 years, starting in the San Juans, then becoming Forest Supervisor of Big Horn National Forest, Rio Grande National Forest and Black Hills National Forest. He then moved back to Durango.
Mr. Johns was a Mason, an Elk and a member of the Strater Coffee Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, hiking, picnics, going on drives, archaeology, hunting and having a good beer with family and friends.
He is preceded in death by son, Robert David Johns, in 1959; brother, Frederick A. Johns; and wife, Porrena, on December 30, 1983. He is survived by daughters Barbara M. Lee of Durango, Colo., and Susan J. Adams of Bloomfield, N.M., four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.
