“Not All Who Wander are Lost… Some of Us are Looking for Cool Rocks.”
John Herbert “Fergy” Ferguson was born August 17, 1937, at the American Legion Hospital in Telluride, CO (which is now the Telluride Historical Museum) to John Ferguson, Jr. and Gladys (Dill) Ferguson and passed away peacefully on February 14, 2025, at his home in Ignacio, CO. He was 87 years old.
John is survived by his sibling Alice Ferguson, adopted son Cliff Ferguson, nephews John S. Bennett, Scott Bennett, and Shawn Kozlowski and niece Andria (Bennett) Hudspeth. John is preceded in death by his mother Gladys (Dill) Ferguson and his father John Ferguson Jr., brother Ray Ferguson, sister Claire (Ferguson) Bennett and nephew Chris Bennett.
The Ferguson family moved from Telluride, CO to Durango, CO in 1954. John attended school in Telluride Schools and Durango High School and was in the class of 1955. He also attended Fort Lewis College in Durango and Colorado School of Mines.
John will be remembered as a man who deeply loved his family and friends, country, and his Scottish heritage.
John’s first love was mining. John was instilled in the mining and minerals extraction industry because he lived in the middle of a mining camp and had a lot of friendships and conversations with knowledgeable adults at a very early age and had a lot of mentorships from them. He and his friends formed the Bridal Veil Mining Co dug into the hill behind the house at Pandora. He worked in Silverton mines and visited many others in the SW. He loved Silverton and had many friends there.
John’s second love was the Army enough that he served 3 separate times and was a member of the American Legion Post 28. His first tour was in the 1950’s during the cold war.
The Fourth of July was especially fun with John. He wore his camo kilt and carried the US Flag nearly every year. He marched in the parades in Telluride and Durango.
As the years went by, he traveled to various mines, national parks, and beaches all around the country. He especially loved the waters off North Carolina and west Texas. He would often take the kids, when they were young, fishing and boating in the Durango area.
For those of you who knew my brother John Ferguson: His celebration of life will be held at the American Legion in Durango. CO on June 28. 2025 at 1:00 PM. Wear your Scottish plaid (tartan) if you have one.
