Lawrence Huntington

June 18, 1918 — March 7, 2015

Lawrence R. Huntington of Hesperus, CO, passed on March 7th, 2015, he was 96. A service will be held at 10:30am, Sat., March 14th, at the Double Tree Hotel Ballroom in Durango, CO. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery.
Lawrence was born June 18th, 1918 in Durango, CO to Leonard and Emma Huntington. He was raised in Hesperus. He was schooled in Dillon, CO, The Rockvale Schoolhouse in Hay Gulch, and attended High School at the old Fort Lewis Campus, Farmington, NM, and graduated from Durango High School.
After high school, Lawrence drove a propane delivery truck from Cortez to the San Luis Valley. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II where he served in the 2nd Armored Division (Hell on Wheels) in the European Theater. To his service record he served in 5 major campaigns including the invasion of Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge.
Lawrence returned home to the family ranch and diligently worked the land for his entire life. He was married to Leola Bacus in Gallup, NM in 1946. She preceded him in death in 1965. Together they raised their 4 children and he served his community on various boards such as: the La Plata County Fair Board, Durango 9-R School Board, the La Plata County Water Conservancy Board, Animas La Plata Conservation Dist., a Charter Member of the La Plata County Cattlemen's Assoc., Basin Co-op Board, La Plata Electric Board, and the Farm Credit System (PCA) Board.
He married a high school classmate in 1966, Margaret O'Brien Macdonald, and she too preceded his passing in 1997.
He is survived by his children: Dan (Doneva) Huntington, Roberta Shupe, Lenna (Robert) Echols, and Cindy (Rich) Winn, 2 siblings, Frances Hotter and C.W. Huntington, Step-children: Patricia (Cloyce) Smith, Robert Macdonald, Jeanne Turner, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his former spouses, parents, a grandson, a brother: Dick Huntington and a son-in-law.
Memorial contributions may be made to the La Plata County Cattlemen's Scholarship Fund.
