Violet Elizabeth Shamblin Hubbs of Durango, CO died at her home surrounded by family on Oct. 5, 2020. Born July 15, 1933 in Charleston, WVA, she had recently moved to the Southwest in 2018 after 43+ years in Los Angeles, CA. She was born in a mountain-river town and died in a mountain-river town that reminded her of home.
She was a Marine during the Korean War, became the first female singer for The Marine Corps Band in Camp Pendleton, CA and was crowned Miss Camp Pendleton in her first year of service. She was an MFA graduate from The UCLA School of Film, Theater & Televison, a retired ethnographic documentary filmmaker, photographer and poet. She was active in Women in Film, The Sundance Institute, The American Film Institute and worked with famed lawyer Gloria Allred in the 1970's to further women's equality and to try to help ratify the ERA. A devoted Episcopalian in Los Angeles and Durango, church was always "coming home" to her.
Her passions were her daughters, her family, nature, filmmaking, music, photography, hiking, writing poetry and songs. She was a voracious reader, world traveler and passionate about social justice, the plights of orphaned children, and anyone vulnerable and in need. She was a "force of nature" and "Ultra-Violet" to all who knew her well.
She is survived by her daughters Holly Keith Hubbs (sp. Todd Lyon) of Los Angeles, CA and Heather Hazlett Hubbs Stevens (sp. Cleve Stevens, Jr.) of Durango, CO, her sister Dixie Lee Knier of Neosho, MO and Deborah Shamblin of PA, and many beloved nieces and nephews and cousins across the country.
She was preceded in death by husband: Charles Taylor Hubbs, Daughter Elizabeth (Beth) Romayne Hubbs, Parents Charles Luke Shamblin & Lena Shamblin, and Brother Charles Arick Shamblin.
