Obituary for Gladys L. Hooper

Gladys L. Hooper, 91, died Friday, April 29, 2011, at home in Bayfield, Colo. A memorial service will be Friday, May 6, 2011, at 3 p.m. at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Chaplain Earl Caudill of the Hospice of Mercy will be officiating. Cremation will have occurred.

Mrs. Hooper was born August 12, 1919, in Pueblo, Colo., the daughter of Earl and Corinne Steele. Most of the extended Steele family moved from the Beulah-Burnt Mill area by train from Pueblo to Ignacio in 1920. They settled in the Wallace Gulch area North of Bayfield. She rode by horseback to the old Moss School for grades 1-8 and graduated from Bayfield High School in 1937.

She married Ollie D. Reed in 1939 and honeymooned in the Blanco Basin Wilderness. They traveled together while he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and spent time in Wyoming, Kansas, Red Rock Theater area and Vallecito Dam. They began their family while tent living, eventually settling on a ranch near Bayfield together with her sister, Grace and Ollie’s brother, Archie, who had married earlier and formed Reed Bros. partnership in hauling milk, lumber, and gasoline in and around Bayfield. Together, she and Ollie had three children.

After Ollie’s death in 1962, Gladys entered the workforce. She worked as a waitress and as a sales clerk in this area for many years. In 1978 she married Robert Hooper while living in Durango. Upon their retirement in 1980 they moved to Bullhead City, Ariz., and also spent time in their summer home in Pagosa Springs. Bob died in 1990. Gladys returned to Bayfield in 2008 to be closer to family while still maintaining her home in Arizona.

Gladys had a deep love for her children and family. Her family states that she loved to dance; from square dancing in the 1950’s, Velma’s in the 1970’s and 1980’s, and she was still dancing at the age of 85. She enjoyed camping, fishing, and snowshoeing. She loved her flowers and watching the deer and birds in her yard.

She is survived by Donna Horn and Linda K. Curtis (daughters) of Bayfield, Irma Snooks (sister) of Bullhead City, Ariz.; Stanley Steele (brother) of Bayfield; Gordon Steele (brother) of Reno, Nev.; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, and Chuck Ecker (longtime companion) of Bullhead City, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husbands; Ollie and Robert, and her son James Reed.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice of Mercy, 1 Mercado St., Suite 270, Durango, CO 81301.
