Kenneth H. Hiner
Kenneth Hiner passed away on September 28, 2011, at his home on the Florida Mesa, at the age of 92.
Kenneth Harley Hiner was born at home on the Florida Mesa to Clarence and Esther Hiner on August 28, 1919. He married Lena Murphy (of Durango) in Los Angeles in 1941. He served in the United States Army in Italy during World War II in a military post office. After the war, Mr. and Mrs. Hiner returned from Los Angeles to Durango, where Mr. Hiner owned and operated a dairy farm on the Florida Mesa for 22 years. Upon selling the dairy farm, Mr. Hiner went to work with his brothers Bill and Eldon building homes as the Hiner Brothers.
Mr. Hiner played the guitar and violin. He enjoyed having picnics in the La Plata Mountains and taking his Jeep Cherokee over the offroad passes in the high country.
Mr. Hiner was preceded in death by his four brothers: Ellis, Bill, Eldon and Albert, and sister Marguerite Culhane.
Mr. Hiner is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lena Hiner, son David and daughter-in-law Linda Hiner of Durango, son Bruce Hiner of Durango, sisters Marion Weber of Bloomfield, N.M., and Lillian Davis of Durango. Other survivors include grandchildren Kenny Hiner of Albuquerque, N.M., Sean Hiner of Texas and Chris Hiner of Durango, and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011, at the Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church, 1024 County Road 230, Durango, CO 81301. The Reverend Dan Straw will officiate. Interment will occur following the services at Crestview Cemetery at Elmore's Corner. A reception will be held afterwards at the Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of Mercy or the Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church.
