Obituary for
Edward L. Hickman
Edward L. Hickman, "Gus", age 95, passed away peacefully in his sleep August 14, 2012. "You almost made it to 100, Grandpa."
Gus, as he was affectionately called by many, was born to Mittie and William Hickman on July 3, 1917, in Cross Timbers, Mo. His family moved to Bayfield in 1920 where Ed and his six siblings grew up. Ed met Lois Robbins in Bayfield and they were married in 1938. Ed and Lois had four children.
He moved his family to Gunnison, Colo., in 1950 so he could attend barber school. Upon completion, he moved his family back to Bayfield, where he opened his barber shop on Mill Street. He was the only barber in Bayfield, and after 40 years he moved the shop to his home and continued working for another 20 years. He loved to reminisce with his customers with many grand stories.
Ed loved to work outside in his yard and every year produced a variety of wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers in his large garden.
He is preceded in death by one infant son, Harlan; his first wife, Lois, and second wife, Mary. He is survived by one daughter, Caroline Hickman; two sons, Harvey Hickman (Becky) and Howard Hickman (Jean); six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will occur from 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 17, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 560 Buck Highway, Bayfield on Saturday, August 18, 2012. Burial will follow at Pine River Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
“Grandpa, we will miss you forever.”
Your loving family
