Obituary for Edison D. Hickman

Edison Dean Hickman, 89, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Four Corners Health Care Center in Durango, Colo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at 10 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Larry Gallegos C.R. will be officiating. Burial will occur at Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield.

Mr. Hickman was born January 24, 1922, in Henderson, Iow,a the son of Forrest and Lillie Hickman. Mr. Hickman was known as “Bud” as well as “Ed”. He grew up in Bayfield and attended school there. He entered into the Armed Forces during World War II and was an MP at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. It was there that he met Teresa Corrigan. She worked at the PX (military Base Exchange store) at Fort Bragg. They were married Sept. 9, 1945, in North Carolina and after his time in the service, they moved to Bayfield. He worked for Kugel Equipment Company, McDonald's Flooring, Valiant Chair Manufacturer, Sower Brother’s Lumber Yard and as a rancher and farmer. He even served as fire chief for the Pine River Volunteer Fire department in years past.

Mr. Hickman worked up until his 80's when he went "part time" and then he finally retired when he was 85. Bud's favorite pasttimes were square dancing and woodworking. He was a gifted carpenter having learned the trade from his father. An example of his trade includes the clock hands on the La Plata county court house. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church, was a past member of the Good Sam's Club and San Juan Swingers Square Dancers.

He is survived by Kathy (Bob) Aliano (daughter and son-in-law) of Centennial, Colo., Bridget M. (Neil) Sanders (granddaughter and grandson-in-law) , Rob (Allison) Aliano (grandson and granddaughter-in-law) , Justine Sanders and Annie Aliano (great granddaughters) , Joanne McCoy (sister) of Bayfield, Colo., Sharon Hickman (sister) of Bayfield, Colo., Samuel Hickman (brother) of Wheatridge, Colo., Edward "Gus" Hickman (uncle) of Bayfield, Colo., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Teresa Hickman and his sister Jewell “Judy” Mitchell.
