Obituary for
Floy I. Hickerson
Durango resident Floy Irene Ewing Hickerson died at home on January 22, 2012, of natural causes. She was 96.
Floy was born January 18, 1916, in Lugert, Okla., daughter of Charles G. Ewing and Dora Eleanor Davis, sister of Roy Davis Ewing and Margaret Ella Ewing.
She was raised on the family farm in Lugert, and attended Lone Wolf High School. On June 28, 1937, she married Leslie Ray Hickerson of Lugert. They worked on farms in Oklahoma until they moved to Southern California in 1942. Floy and Ray traveled in their Model A Ford with their two-year-old son, Donald Ray, and pregnant with their daughter Patricia Annette. They had thirteen flat tires along the way, and Ray patched the tire every time, since they wanted to return the spare tire they had borrowed back to Floy's father in good condition.
In California, where their daughters Patricia Annette and Carol Ann were born, Floy worked at home making HO train parts and then in a machine shop making small parts for airplanes. Over the years, Floy enjoyed making clothes for her children and grandchildren, crocheting, collecting and refurbishing dolls. In 1976, upon retirement, they moved to Durango, Colo., where they maintained a large garden and fruit trees, receiving many awards at the La Plata County Fair for their produce, baked goods and crafts. As a devoted member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Floy gave of her time volunteering in the Community Service Center, mending and distributing clothes to those in need.
Floy was preceded in death by her siblings and husband of 66 years. She is survived by her son Donald Hickerson of Grand Junction, daughter Patricia Gardner of Durango, daughter Carol (Jerry) Mallari of Durango, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
"Floy was greatly loved by her family, friends and church family and will be deeply missed," her family said.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Durango Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 1775 Florida Road, Durango.
