Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Heyen

Elizabeth “Betty” Heyen, 84, Passed away peacefully Saturday, April 05, 2014 in Phoenix, Arizona. A Graveside Service will be Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenmount Cemetery, Chaplain Earl Caudill will be officiating.

Mrs. Heyen was born October 9, 1929 in Kansas City, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Pearl Shanklin. She was the youngest of 9 children and her father was a Baptist minister. Betty graduated high school from Emerson IA. She then attended nursing school and graduated from Emmanuel Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 as a registered nurse. Betty married Wilfred “Willie” Heyen on April 19, 1953 and the couple moved to Durango in 1963. She worked at Mercy Medical center assisting in the surgery department until her retirement in 1991.


Betty was a lifelong and active Christian servant. She was also a gifted baker; Her gifts of baked delights were known and coveted amongst her family and friends!

She is survived by her spouse of 61 years, Willie Heyen of Wickenburg, Ariz., 3 children: Roger Heyen (Spouse: Karen) of Glendale, Ariz, Teri Whalen (Spouse: Gary) of Durango, Colo., and Charles Heyen of Seattle Wash., and 4 grandchildren: Jesse Heyen, Olivia Heyen, Daniele Whalen and Alexa Whalen.

Betty was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Heyen in 1970.
