Obituary Notice for Joseph M. Herrera
Joseph M. Herrera, 90, died Saturday, January 7, 2012 at home in Durango, Colorado.
Mr. Herrera was born August 22, 1921 in Chama, New Mexico the son of Jose and Adelia Herrera. After graduation from El Rito, New Mexico, he joined the U.S. Navy June 29, 1942. Mr. Herrera served in North Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. Joe was awarded Victory Medals for his service to his country. He was discharged November, 1945.
In 1952, Joe married Sally Abeyta, at Sacred Heart Church, in Durango, Colorado. The couple moved to Los Angeles, California, where Joe went to work for North American Aircraft Company. In 1954 he was hired to work for Hughes Aircraft, as a computer programmer. He was involved with an early and secret computer system, for aircraft design and production. Mr. Herrera was a dedicated employee for Hughes Aircraft and retired in 1980 after 26 years. He and Sally moved back to Durango in 1987, where they enjoyed politics, sports and fishing. Joe's real joy was always his loving wife Sally, daughters and many close friends. Joe was very active in the community, as a member of the VFW, Elks and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Sally of 59 years, daughters; Dolores Von Biela and Dorothy Herrera, of Torrance California: sister, Molly Archuleta of Durango and numerous nieces and nephews. Joe is preceded in death by his sister Rosana Romero and his parents Adelina and Jose Herrera.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 16, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Joseph Gallegos C.R. of Sacred Heart Catholic Church will be officiating. Burial will occur at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. A rosary will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Sunday, January 15, 2012 at 6pm.
