Josefita Herrera passed away Thursday, May 27, 2021, at Mercy Hospice House, surrounded by family. She was 106 years old.
Josefita was born June 14, 1914, to Ramundo and Adelina Utemia (Martinez) Trujillo in Chimayo, New Mexico. In her youth, the family moved to Durango. At a young age, she began working outside of her home to help her parents with expenses. In 1948 she married Joe Herrera and they moved to a farm in Ignacio, Colorado.
Though she and Joe never had any children, she loved her extended family - nieces and nephews - like they were her own. She enjoyed dancing at the Grange Hall, sewing, quilting, cooking, traveling with Joe, and her church family. She spread joy through the neighborhood with her cooking and company. Once when asked her advice for a long life, she said, "Keep working hard. And be happy"
She is survived by her sister: Mary Chavez of Farmington; and numerous nephews and nieces including her caretaker, Carmella.
She is preceded by her husband, Joe; parents; siblings: George, Gregorio, Merced, Eliza, Raymundo, Benita and Mary; great-nephew: Moises Dominguez.
