Obituary for
Donald M. Hall
Donald M. Hall died Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. He was 63.
Don was born November 21, 1948, in Steamboat Springs, Colo., to Max and Loretta Hall. He was raised on a ranch in Steamboat Springs for most of his life and spent his teens and early 20's in Mesa, Ariz. Mr. Hall graduated from Westwood High School in Mesa, Ariz., and attended Mesa Community College.
In 1976 he married Theresa Fitzgerald and had two children, Jamie and Casey. Mr. Hall returned to the family ranch in Steamboat Springs, where Therese and he built their log home together. He worked as a mechanic and then operations manager for Waste Management in Steamboat Springs and later in Silverthorne, Colo. The family moved to Durango in 1993, where Mr. Hall bought the Durango Smoke Shop with his brother Glenn Hall, starting the Hall Brothers’ Pipe Dream. His marriage ended with a divorce in 1994. After Glenn's death in 1995, Mr. Hall continued running the business until he sold it in 2009.
“Don loved being outdoors,” according to his family. He was an avid camper, hiker, fisherman and hunter. His children said “He taught us to love and respect nature. He was an amazing father, always supporting us to follow our dreams and taught us self-reliance and responsibility.” His family also said, "Having a loving relationship with his family and many friends was very important to him. He was known as a giver. He went above and beyond the role of an employer, supporting and helping the many people that worked at the smoke shop over the years.”
Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his brother, Glenn Hall; former wife, Therese Hall; and father, William Max Hall. He is survived by his son, Casey Hall, of Durango; daughter, Jamie Hall, of Seattle, Wash.; mother, Loretta Hall, of Mancos; and sister, Janice Hall, of Mancos.
A memorial will take place for Don on Sunday November 25, 2012, at the Fort Lewis College Chapel at 11:00 am. All those who knew and loved him are welcome.
Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be spread in the La Plata Mountains in the spring.
