Ignacio resident, Melvin Haga, died April 22, 2015, at Cottonwood Inn in Durango, after a 15 year battle with cancer. Melvin was born to Seward & Nellie Haga in Floyd, NM on March 29, 1934, where his family ranched. At 11, they moved to Bay-field, CO where they continued ranching along CR 502. He had three sisters and twin brothers. In 1953, he married June Russell in Durango. He and June have always attended the Church of Christ. His careers included: the Smelter mine, rodeo stock contractor, launching Mesa Propane, buying & selling real estate, and building custom homes. His passions were cattle ranching, raising & trading horses and rodeoing with his sons. Later, he ranched near Clayton, NM before returning to Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings. He is survived by his wife, June Haga and his four children: Russ Haga (Denise) of Ignacio, Tead Haga (Pattie) of Morrison, OK, David Haga (Cindy) of Ignacio, and Anita Mayes of Ignacio; and 17 grand/great grandchildren.
There will be a visitation at Hood Mortuary on Sunday, April 26, 2015 from 5-7pm. Services will be held at the Bayfield Church of Christ on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 10:00am.
