Obituary for
John F. Gutierrez
Long time Durango resident John F. Gutierrez passed away at the Valley Inn in Mancos, Colo., Nov. 8, 2012, at the age of 78.
John was born in Lumberton, N.M., on January 11, 1934, to Juan and Margaret Miera Gutierrez. John was a truck driver all his life, and he worked for Kimbel, Durango Merc, Holsom Bread, Yellow Freight, and NW Transport for more than 40 years. He received many awards for safe driving.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and before his illness he belonged to the Elk’s Lodge. He was an avid golfer, bowler, pool player, fisherman, and hunter. He was a member of the Teamsters Union.
John is preceded in death by his daughter, Joni Nelson, and sister, Bessie Gutierrez. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Kelly Gutierrez, of Durango; sons Dean Gutierrez of Durango and Steve Gutierrez of Farmington, N.M.; daughters Lisa Griffin of Chula Vista, Calif., and Judy Martin of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one brother, Eugene Gutierrez, of Durango; sisters Mary Ann Webster of Farmington, N.M., and Cecelia Archibeque of Bloomfield, N.M.; one uncle, Horace Miera, of Colorado Springs, and many nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church
