Obituary for Bettie L. Gregg

Former Durango resident Bettie L. Gregg died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011, at her daughter’s home in Dolores. She had just turned 106.

Mrs. Gregg was born to Samuel H. and Abbie Huey Stewart on Nov. 20, 1905, in Cameron, Mo. Her family moved to Enid, Okla., and eventually to Norwood, where she grew up.

Mrs. Gregg graduated from Western State College in Gunnison with a teaching degree. She taught fourth grade in Palisade, where her youngest brother Everett was in her class.

On Dec. 30, 1928, she married Floyd Gregg in Grand Junction. She went for her first ride in an automobile in 1913, when she was 8, and her first plane ride on her honeymoon in Denver.

She and her husband were pioneers in local aviation. He was the pilot, and she managed the appointments for crop and mosquito spraying and bank and medical trips to Denver.

Mrs. Gregg was a charter member of the Durango Christian Church and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed fishing with her son-in-law Leroy Riley.

She moved to Dolores four years ago to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Ken Stocks.

Mrs. Gregg was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Floyd Gregg; and son James Floyd Gregg Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Stocks of Dolores and Ann Riley of Farmington; son Frank Gregg of Saint Louis; sister Helen Leonardelli of Durango; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at the Durango Christian Church, 255 E. 11th St. A graveside service will be held afterward at Greenmount Cemetery.
