Obituary for
Joe "Fly" Goulet
Durango resident Joe (Fly) Goulet died Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was 69. The cause of death was complications from Parkinson’s disease.
Joe was born in Chicago on September 8, 1942 to Mary and Joe Goulet. He grew up on the South Side of the city and graduated from Brother Rice High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Northern Illinois University in 1970.
In the early 1970’s, he moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and became a ski instructor and “ski bum.” After receiving a master’s degree in reading from the University of Colorado, he moved to Southwest Colorado in 1978 and began his teaching career, in schools and on the ski mountain.
He taught in Ignacio, Colorado and Shiprock, N.M., before spending the last 20 years of his teaching career at Mancos Elementary School. Mr. Goulet retired about 10 years ago. He continued teaching skiing, putting in more than 30 years with Purgatory Ski School.
Mr. Goulet was a member of the National Education Association and the Professional Ski Instructors of America.
He enjoyed bicycling and had competed in both the Iron Horse and the Quarter Bicycle Race. Joe also biked to raise money for the Davis-Phinney Foundation that supports living well with Parkinson’s.
Joe loved to run, enjoyed wine, food and jazz and blues music. He enjoyed cheering for his favorite teams, the Chicago White Sox and the CU Buffs.
In 1998, Joe married Nicki Massieon. They had a wonderful time sharing their lives and felt very blessed.
Joe’s passion for life and gentle ways touched many. Joe introduced many people to the joys of tele-skiing and loved helping children overcome difficulties with reading. He savored his many and extensive circle of friends. After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s, he became an advocate for living well with Parkinson’s disease.
He is survived by his wife of almost 14 years, Nicki Massieon of Durango, his two brothers, Philip (Charlie) Goulet of Door County, Wis., and McNeal, Ariz., and his wife, Leslie, Rich and Cathy Goulet of Naperville, Ill., and one niece and four nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 507, on Sunday, February 19 at 3:00 pm, at 901 East 2nd Avenue in Durango.
