Philip Glover

March 7, 1928 — March 9, 2017

Philip Norman Glover age 89 of Durango died surrounded by family and caregivers at home on Thursday, March 9th, 2017 from complications of COPD.

Mr. Glover was born in Lorain, Ohio on March 7th, 1928. Though born in Ohio he grew up in Whitehall, Michigan. He attended school in Whitehall graduating from high school in 1946. From there he attended and graduated from University of Michigan. After graduating from U of M he enlisted in the US Navy and attended Officers training in Newport, Rhode Island. Married in November of 1951 his wife Beverly lived in officers housing in Coronado, California while he served overseas. During his time in the US Navy he served in Korea and traveled to ports all over the South Pacific. He finished his military career with the rank of Lieutenant and as an instructor at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Sons Grant and John were both born in the hospital at the Academy.

Phil didn’t need to look far for his future wife as they were next door neighbors growing up in Whitehall. They often reminisced about working together as children in Phil’s grandfather’s ice cream factory and drug store. Ice cream served at Pitkin’s Drug in Whitehall was well known during that time. Phil developed a love of ice cream that he maintained for his entire life. His wife of 64 years preceded him in death in 2014.
Mr. Glover enjoyed family and friends throughout his life and in particular his two grandchildren Andy and Nicole Glover. Philip’s career after the military was first selling vending equipment which changed into arcade style video games when the game pong was invented. His career had him traveling all over the US for 30 years before retiring. Once retired he made his passion caring for his home in Durango, and helping his children care for theirs. Family and people who knew him were amazed that a person born during the Depression and growing up in a small town became the person who eventually taught at the college level. Since he majored in and taught history, he was an avid reader and always had stories to tell. He truly enjoyed his role as the family historian. In the end he was surrounded by his family and by his incredible group of caregivers Uta Carleno, Buckie Slater, and Richard Presley.

He is survived by children Grant Glover of Flora Vista, New Mexico and John Glover (wife Michele) of Durango, Colorado. In addition, survivors include grandchildren Nicole Glover of Denver, Colorado and Andy Glover of Santa Cruz, California.

Per Philip’s request, there will be no services and a private family memorial will be held. He will be interred at the family grave in Whitehall, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions could be made to the charity of your choice.
