Obituary for
Michael C. Garcia
Durango native Michael Cedric Garcia died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, after a 3 1/2-year battle with lung cancer. He was 55.
Michael was born Feb. 18, 1956, in Durango, to Joseph and Mary Garcia. He graduated from Durango High School. He married Valerie Mestas June 24, 1995, in Laughlin, Nev., on the Colorado River. Michael worked for the United States Postal Service as a mail clerk before he retired.
Known to friends and family as “Suds,” Michael’s first love was his family. He enjoyed music, traveling, hunting, and all things outdoors. His passion was cars and motorcycles.
He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary Garcia. He is survived by His Angel Wife, Valerie Garcia, whom he called “his bestest Mestas;” his two sons, Cameron Mestas of New York City and Tommy Mestas, of Cottonwood, Ariz.; his daughter, Michelle Romero, of Durango; seven grandchildren, two goddaughters, brothers, Dennis and Gerald Garcia and Randy Archuleta; two sisters, Gigi Courdary and Janice Garcia; and numerous nephews and nieces, all of whom live in Durango.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s name to the American Cancer Society for Lung Cancer, 1800 E. Third Ave., Suite 101, Durango, CO 81301.
A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Durango.
