Kathleen Beatrice Frost, 82, died Monday, November 3, 2014 in Durango, Colorado. A wake will be held on Friday, November 7, from 5 pm to 8:45 am the next morning at 231 C.R. 518 (Rainbow Road) Bayfield/Ignacio. A funeral will be Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 10 am at the Southern Ute Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Ouray Memorial Cemetery.
Kathleen “Kate” was born July 29, 1932 in Ignacio, Colorado the daughter of Andrew and Bertha Frost. She grew up in Ignacio (a lifelong resident of the area) and attended the Ute Consolidated School. After graduation, Kathleen attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She worked for the Southern Ute Tribe for a short time and then for the BIA Boarding School as a matron until they closed. She worked for Colorado Job Services for 25 years in Durango, Ignacio and Craig. While working for Job Services, Kathleen obtained numerous awards and recognitions such as, Highest Job Placement awards, Recognition by the Moffat County Commissioners, and a letter of Achievement from the Governor of Colorado.
She also served as an EMT in Ignacio and an ambulance driver for over 10 years. She also instructed CPR training.
She enjoyed attending pow-wows and sun dances and was talented in sewing and beadwork (selections from Kathleen’s beadwork have been displayed in museums in Europe for her outstanding floral designs). One of Kathleen’s proudest moments was attending the grand-opening of the Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. Kathleen loved travel to such destinations as Montana, Las Vegas, Idaho, Washington State, Oregon, Utah, British Columbia and Hawaii. Her relatives were very important and enjoyed her family visits to Fort Duchesne, UT. Her granddaughter and great-grandkids were paramount in her life. Kathleen followed the family tradition of encouraging her family to carry out her Native-American traditional beliefs.
She is survived by her son: Kenneth Frost, granddaughter: Marettas Frost, great-grandchildren: Darien Neskahi and Seranden Frost, Jamar, Katerie, Tatum, and Riley Lang, a Brother: Stanley Frost, and a son-in-law: Justin Lang.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Andrew (WW I Veteran) and Bertha Frost, brothers: Burke, William “Billy” (WWII Veteran), Jack McClure, James; Uncle: Allen Carel; Aunts: Rose L. Watts and Reis G. Wing; great-grandparents: George Norris (Naneece, sub-chief, medicine-man, and war chief of the Southern Ute Tribe) and Mary Norris.
