Obituary for Michael John "Mike" Francil

On September 26, 1957 a beautiful soul came into the world. Michael John Francil was born in Ogallala, Nebraska. Farming, instigated a love for Mike’s “playing in the dirt.” It is his love for the land that inspired his career in excavating. This career led to his working in so many beautiful places around the Durango area, making friends of the various landowners, and a pride in his work that drove him to get up every morning and head out to his “outdoor office.” Along the way Mike met Laurie Brannen. A strong love blossomed. They enjoyed traveling, with many trips to a much-loved spot in Mexico. They enjoyed the simple things such as walking the river path and bike and motorcycle rides together. They shared in the upbringing of three grandchildren, two nieces and a nephew. Summers were filled with gardening, river fun and just plain enjoying every beautiful evening together with friends and family.
Diagnosed with a GBM 4 (a very aggressive brain tumor/cancer) on July 18, 2014 Mike has spent the last year fighting. He threw himself into bike riding most every day. He challenged himself physically and mentally. Through it all maintained a positive outlook as he went through a surgery, chemo, radiation and other various treatments. He appreciated the support and love of his friends and family.
The legacy he leaves behind can be summed up as...Work hard. Stay in shape. Take time to enjoy the flowers, birds and small creatures. Be kind and Love. Be content with what you have. Awake every morning, look outside and exclaim, "It’s a great day to be alive!" While many may think Mike lost his battle on July 21, 2015, those who knew him and loved him, know that in many ways...He Won!!!!
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Laurie Francil; Mother, Helen Thode (Dgo); Sisters, Vicki Francil (Texas) and Sheri Rex (Darren Rex – Dgo). Daughter, Lisa Jossi (Craig Jossi – Castle Rock); Son, James Bunten (Dgo); Granddaughters, Courtney Morrow (Zachary Morrow)and Sara Jossi (Castle Rock); Grandson, Gage Bunten(Dgo); Nieces, Kearsty Hotter (Dgo) and Miranda Rex (Dgo); nephew, Monty Taylor (Oklahoma)and Sister-in-law, Joni Cozby (Chris Cozby – Dgo).
