Obituary for Maggie Belle Foster

Maggie Belle Foster died Thursday, September 20, 2012, at the Mancos Valley Inn in Mancos, Colo. She was 95.

Mrs. Foster was born to Robert E. Lee and Willie Mae Fogle on July 7, 1917, in El Paso, Texas. She grew up in El Paso, graduating from Austin High School in 1934 at the age of 16, and then attended the International Business College in El Paso, graduating in 1935. After graduation she went to work for the Al Hardy Oil Company, where she met George Arthur Foster, Jr. They were married on April 15, 1939. In 1948, they moved to Carlsbad, N.M.

Mrs. Foster went to work for Stagner, Sage, and Walker law firm as a legal secretary in 1961 before becoming the personal secretary for Judge Caswell Neal. Eventually working in the Eddy County Court Clerk’s office, she retired in the early 80's.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School for 10 years and served on various committees. She was a 69-year member of the International Literary Society, Beta Sigma Phi sorority. After retirement, Mrs. Foster volunteered with the hospital auxiliary as a “Pink Lady.” She was also an avid bridge player.

Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Foster, Jr., and their son, George Arthur Foster, III.

She is survived by her son, William (Connie Keeler-Foster) Lee Foster of Carlsbad, N.M., daughter, Sharon (James E.) Marie Harper of Breen, Colo.; four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place at Hood Mortuary. A graveside memorial service will be held in Carlsbad, N.M., on a date yet to be determined.
