Paul Joseph Figler was born on July 19, 1930 to Helen and George Figler in Western Massachusetts. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts in 1953.
Paul practiced Engineering in England and Las Vegas prior to retiring and moving to Durango where he led a solitary and peaceful life reading good books, following (mostly American League) baseball and feeding wild animals from his porch in the tall ponderosa pines. Paul loved all creatures and doted especially on his cats, Amanda and Boris, both adopted strays. Among Paul’s favorite topics was Ted Williams’ batting records, the tragic life story of Frances Farmer, the beauty of Virna Lisi and the capitals of all of the States in the U.S.. Paul had a wealth of historic knowledge and life experience, and enjoyed sharing those with neighbors Anne or Ray at his all-time revered establishment in Durango, “Coffee Joe’s” (Durango’ Joes near Walmart).
Paul lived they way he wanted to, in the quiet of his home and property, independently. He passed the day after his 88th birthday, on July 20th 2018 with a friend and neighbor by his side. Paul asked that no services be held. In Paul’s honor you can donate to the Humane Society, have a cup of coffee at Durango Joe’s, and tip your servers well.
