Pete Ferrari, 97, a life-long resident of Durango, passed away at his home March 21, 2015 surrounded by his daughters and family. Pete was born December 13, 1917 in Silverton, Colorado. During World War II, Pete was an Army Sargent and Chief of an Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Section. On returning home he worked for and retired from the US Postal Service. His hobbies were gardening, hunting, painting, raising tumbler pigeons, and in his later years folk dancing. Pete loved to share stories about his family, the history of Durango, and his time in the Army. He was active in the VFW, Knights of Columbus, and Colombo Lodge, and was also a Benedictine Oblate.
Pete is survived by his daughters – Bonnie (Tom) Sawyer, Noreen Ferrari, his dear friend Debbie Berrier, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two sisters – Alvie (Darrell) Paulek, Olga (Andy) Bryce and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pete was preceded in death by his wife Inez, brothers Arno, Albert, and Joe, and sisters Alice and May.
The family would like to thank the numerous friends, neighbors, his special nurse, and caregivers who have made Pete’s life so full and rich in his aging years.
Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary Friday, March 27 from 3-6:00 PM and the funeral mass will be at St. Columba Parish Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 PM. Interment will be at Greenmount Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the local VFW or the Wounded Warrior Project.
