A. Bruce Fassett, age 90, died peacefully in his home, May 17, 2022.
Bruce was born in Durango, Colorado on September 1, 1931, to Harry and Nella Fassett. He and his family have farmed and ranched for over 100 years in La Plata County, having cattle, sheep, and crops spread out from Missionary Ridge to south of Ignacio and into New Mexico in Largo Canyon.
Bruce graduated from Durango High School in 1949. He soon joined the United States Air Force, and was stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. It was there that he met and married his wife of 55 years, Barbara Vern Phillips. After his service discharge, the couple came back to the family place on the Florida Mesa.
As well as raising a family, farming and ranching, Bruce served on multiple community boards and committees. He was a long-time board member of La Plata Electric Assn and the Colorado Ute Electric Assn. He was a school board member for Durango School District 9-R.
Bruce had a near fatal horse - cow accident in July, 1980. After a year of convalescing and rehab he returned to his ranch, continuing to work the land and cattle through shear grit until just a few years ago.
Bruce was preceded in death by his wife Barbara, his daughter Brandi Renee Fassett, grandson Dustin Malouff, and his parents. He is survived by daughters: Cindy (Buddy) Swinney of Gardendale, TX and Dena (Lonnie) Malouff of Durango; grandchildren: Jesse Malouff of Durango, Shelly Burns of Texas, Michelina Paulek of Durango, Crystal Harrison of Texas, Shay Broadhead of Oklahoma; 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
