Evelyn LaVonne Elston (McCoy), born August 5, 1937, Durango, Colorado passed peacefully, surrounded by family, at Cottonwood Inn, Durango on March 23, 2025. Services will be held Friday, April 11, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield.
LaVonne grew up in Bayfield, Colorado surrounded by both her parents’ extended family, graduating from Bayfield High School in 1955. She married Carl Dean Humbard on October 30, 1955. The marriage produced three children, and would end in divorce in 1969. She married Jack Elston in September of 1971, at her family’s ranch on Texas Creek, and the family relocated from Denver Colorado to Bayfield.
LaVonne worked as a professional seamstress when her children were young, creating uniforms for many Denver area airline stewardesses. She was also a resident property manager for several apartment complexes in the Denver area. After relocation to her hometown, she would work at Mongomery Ward in Durango, CO until it closed in December of 1985. She then worked at the Red Lion Inn until retirement.
Mom was a Lioness, belonged to Beta Sigma Phi International, and worked with many other civic organizations during her life. She was a wonderful cook and loved to feed her family and friends. An avid gardener, she had a beautiful yard and garden that was her pride and joy. She passed these skills, and many others on to her children and their friends. Her home was always open to anyone in need, and her children’s friends filled her home.
LaVonne is preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Melba McCoy, and her husband Jack. She is survived by her children Becky Hotal (Keith), son Dean Humbard, son Will Humbard (Sandi). Grandchildren Stacey Otero-Rolfshagen (Shane), Aubrey Cannon, Brett Humbard (Nicholas), Nicole Rogers (Dustin), Christopher Humbard (Kaitria), and Great Grandchildren Tucker and Tatum Rogers and William Humbard. Her sister Cheryl Cowan, niece Candice Cowan and nephew Jared Cowan.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Cottonwood Inn of Durango for their love and care for our mother during her time there. You are greatly appreciated.
