Evalyn Russell passed away Thursday, April 20, 2023, at her home in Ignacio. She was 77 years old.
Evalyn was born April 3, 1946, to Fredrick and Sarah Pinnecoose in Durango. She grew up and attended schools in Ignacio. She was married to Dean Hudson and their marriage later ended in divorce. Evalyn worked for KSUT and then became a Social Worker for the Southern Ute Tribe. She has served as a Tribal Council Member from 1990-1993. She continued her career in social work after serving on the council and retired in the late 1990's.
Evalyn participated in numerous Traditional ceremonies including Pow-wows, Sundance, and Bear Dance. She traveled to other tribal areas including Fort Duchesne, UT, and Fort Hall, ID, to visit family and attend ceremonies.
She enjoyed time at the casinos and she loved Judge Judy. Evalyn is known for her crafting and sewing classes, but most of all she enjoyed being with her grandkids.
She is survived by her siblings: Winifred P. Cuch, Claria "Cinderella" Pinnecoose, Lornie (Gaye) Pinnecoose, Sr., Barney Bear Pinnecoose, Fred Cecil Pinnecoose; children: Richard "Favorite" Hudson, Sarah Russell, and Deichman Hudson, Jr.; grandchildren: Deion Hudson, Klayson (Elisha)Smith, Aspen Pinnecoose and Alric Hudson; great-grandchildren: Isabella, Aubrey, Sophia, Judah and Mattison; and many neices and nephews, extended family and wonderful friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Jolene Pinnecoose and Laveta Vigil; and brothers: Stanley Pinnecoose, Sam Pinnecoose and Bennett Thompson.
A wake service will be held at her home 656 County Road 516 on Sunday Evening and a Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 24, 2023, at 10:00 a.m., at the Southern Ute Memorial Chapel.
