Obituary for Eva Bernice Erwin

Eva Bernice Roberts Erwin, age 90, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at her home in Durango, Colo.

Mrs. Erwin was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Kline, Colo., daughter of William Pinkney and Mable Etta Underhill Roberts. When she was four, they moved to Dunton, Colo., in a covered wagon and later moved to Durango, where they homesteaded near 36th Street. Her mother was the first girl child born in La Plata County in 1880.

Growing up in Durango, she married Paul Russell Erwin Jan. 10, 1942. She worked for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co. (Mountain Bell) as a switchboard operator for 27 years, retiring in 1981 from the Durango office.

Eva enjoyed many years of camping trips and spending time with her granddaughters.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years Paul Russell Erwin, son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Theresa Erwin; granddaughters: Tracie Peterson and Paula Smith of Cheyenne, WY; great-grandchildren: Megan, Mark, and Michael Peterson, and Kellie Smith of Cheyenne, WY; a niece Crystal Carroll; nephews: Pat Roberts and Jerry Peters and their families.

She was preceded in death by Dale Leslie Erwin (son), Harry, Marion and Roy (Shorty) Peters (half-brothers), Mable Hafling Murley (sister), and Bill Roberts (brother).

Eva's wishes were to be cremated and buried with her son in Crestview Cemetery in Durango. A family gathering will be held at a later date.
