Amazing Grace died last Monday, January 29, 2018. She made it to 100 years 3 months old! That means she was born in 1917. The same year that JFK was born.
Medically, she just wore out. The onset of macular degeneration, delivered her to Durango in 1997 where friends and family could keep an eye on her. She had lived in Walnut Creek, California 40 plus years and in that State since 1945.
She lived at Evenings Porch Assisted Living in Bayfield the past two years. Right up to the end, she still insisted that she didn’t need any "assistance". When she began her sentence there, she argued that she didn’t want to be in a place full of old people. (Grace, you’re 5 years older than anyone else.) She evolved into the "trivia contest" queen consistently destroying the competition in the monthly event.
Gramma Grace was an only child as was her husband Keith who died almost 50 years ago. That means there are no uncles, aunts, cousins, or nephews. There are however two sons and one daughter. Rex and his wife Donna live in Durango. Dick lives in Mesquite, Nevada and Mary abides in Chico, California. Granddaughter Annie and her husband Cliff live on the Nevada side of South Lake Tahoe and Granddaughter Kristie lives in Kansas City.
Grace loved her new friends and caregivers at Evenings Porch. Here’s what some of her fellow inmates had to say about her …
Jerry - My Sweetheart
Joan - Kind
Ellen - Remarkable
Jim H - Sharp
Darwin – Longevity
Jan - Gracious
Helen - Beloved
Polly - Sweetness
Jim D - Knowledgeable
Audrey - Interesting
She is on her way to her final resting place next to her mother in Nevada, Iowa. (That’s ne-VAY-da. Kind of like we say flo-REE-da here in Durango).
We LOVE YOU Mom … Grace … Amazing Grace … Gramma Grace.
GOD SPEED !!
