W. Franklin Elmore, husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, proprietor, and friend, passed away Saturday, August 27, 2016 at the age 96.
Franklin was born March 29, 1920 in Missouri and moved to California as a young child. His family settled in Durango, CO in 1929 where they farmed their land on Florida Mesa. After school, he joined the US Navy and served 4 years during WWII. While enlisted he sent money back to his parents to assist with the building of Elmore's Store. While home on leave, he and Annie Laurie "Peggy" were married in Aztec, NM on May 25, 1945. At the conclusion of his service, Franklin became a proud lifelong Veteran's of Foreign Wars member.
After separating from the US Navy, Franklin was an electrician by trade. He was a charter member of the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers (IBEW) union in Grand Junction. After retiring, he and Peggy operated Elmore's store until January 1979. They enjoyed traveling "South" in the winter for the next 21 years, but Durango was always their home.
Franklin was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, son, Bill, sisters, Leatha and Myrtle.
He is survived by son, Willie (Nicki) Elmore, grandaughter, Rae Jean (Chris) Zoltowski, and great-grandson, CJ Zoltowski, all of Bayfield.
