Obituary for Robert A. Davis

Robert Allen Davis, 87, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colo.

Mr. Davis was born May 4, 1924, in Durango, Colo., the son of Francis and Winneferd Davis. He graduated from Durango High School in 1942. He and his twin brother, Richard, joined the US Navy in April of 1944. He was on the USS Uvalde in the Pacific during World War II. He participated in the Okinawa invasion, awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with one star, the American area medal and the World War II Victory medal. He was discharged on May 13, 1946.

On September 30, 1950, he married Lillian Hiner. He worked at the Vanadium Mill, and then ran a dairy from 1958 - 1966. He carried the mail for the U.S. Post Office until he retired in 1988.

He enjoyed hunting, raising quarter horses, taking pictures and traveling. He attended 10 of his Navy reunions in different parts of the US. Robert and Lillian would have celebrated 62 years together on September 30, 2012.

He is survived by his wife Lillian, Dixie (Ned) Chavez (daughter and son in law) of Grand Junction, Colo., Pat Mars (daughter) of Aztec, N.M., Debbie (Jeff) Bond (daughter and son in law) of Ramah, N.M., Elizabeth Shoemaker (sister) of California, Peg Davis (sister) of Oregon, 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother Richard, two brothers George and Francis, his sister Ethel and his grandson, Clint Mars.

A memorial service will be Monday, April 30, 2012, at 10:00 A.M. at Florida Presbyterian Church on County Road 230. Rev. Dr. Dan Straw of Florida Presbyterian Church will be officiating. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango. Interment of ashes will occur at Crestview Cemetery in Durango.
