Thurlow E. "Joe" Cowell
Thurlow E. "Joe" Cowell, 88, died Friday, March 2, 2012, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. Funeral services will be held under the direction of Reeb Funeral Home of Sylvania, Ohio. Interment will take place at Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio.
Mr. Cowell was born January 29, 1924, in Silica, Ohio, the son of Enos and Ethel Cowell. He grew up and attended schools in Silica. When he was 17 years of age, he enlisted in the Army Air Force during World War II and served in the European theater. After his military service, Mr. Cowell became employed with Teledyne Technologies of Toledo, Ohio, and was a machinist for them for 30 years. He married Lena Cardone and they had four children. That marriage ended in divorce. Mr. Cowell then met Carol Diehlman in Ohio and they were married in 1971. In 2004, they retired and came to live in the Durango/Bayfield area.
Mr. Cowell was a member of the Region 2B Local 12 Union, the American Legion Post #0143 and AARP. He enjoyed watching the local wildlife (especially deer), fishing, camping and spending time with family, "watching" the stock market, and listening to country western music.
He is survived by Carol Cowell (spouse) of Bayfield, Robert (Gail) Cowell (son) of Marysville, Ohio, Sue (Stan) Weatherbee (daughter) of Cumby, Texas, Mario (Mary) Cowell (son) of Commerce, Texas, Mark (Bobbie) Cowell (son) of Stillwater, Okla., and 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers and one sister.
