Joseph Justin Contreras, 96, of Durango left us peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2022 surrounded by family. Joseph was born October 17, 1925 in Espanola, New Mexico to Adolph and Pauline Contreras. He graduated from Durango High school in 1943. After graduation he joined the Merchant Marines. Later he was employed by the City of Durango. He retired after 24 years of service in 1988. After retirement he enjoyed many days having coffee and sharing stories with his group of friends at McDonald's. He also enjoyed volunteering at Durango Manna Soup Kitchen for many years.
Joseph is preceded in death by his parents, one son; Richard (a Vietnam veteran), and three sisters.
Joseph is survived by his daughter and caregiver; Catherine Contreras Durango CO., son; Don Contreras Albuquerque, NM and grandson; Brian Albrecht Durango, CO., As well as many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 254 E. 5th Ave. Durango, CO. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 10:30am followed by Mass at 11:00am. Celebrant will be Fr. Victor Mendez Cano. There will be a small reception held immediately following the service at the parish hall basement across the street from the Church.
Joseph will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Burial will be held this coming summer at Greenmount cemetery with a dual service for Joseph and his son; Richard.
