Clara Mae was born in Blanca, Colorado to Carl and Dorothy (Tyson) Asay. She was raised in the San Luis Valley, and the oldest of 4 children. Clara Mae was raised with a strong belief in her Lord Jesus Christ and a love for her family and community. She instilled these traits in her children and family throughout life. Clara Mae met her husband, John Alan Schmitt when she was a freshman in high school. John lived in Hesperus, Colorado and many trips were made over Wolf Creek Pass during their courtship. After their engagement on Christmas 1951 John was drafted into the Army. Clara Mae said “the mailman became a friend”! John and Clara Mae were married on May 30, 1954 at Bowen Methodist Church. They lived the rest of their lives on the Schmitt family farm in Hesperus, Colorado and were active members at the Marvel Methodist Church. Clara Mae had been a teacher leader for Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), a secretary of the La Plata Water Conservancy District, active in the PTA while her children were in school, and always supportive of the church community.
Clara Mae was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John Schmitt. She is survived by her 4 children Matthew (Cheryl), Nicholas (Martha), Leslie (Barbara) and Carla (Mike Badger), 24 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister LaVona Heide, and brothers Phillip and Charles Asay.
