Christine M. Chavez
Native Durango resident Christine M. Chavez returned to the care of her Lord Saturday, June 30, 2018 at her home after a brief but fierce battle with brain cancer. She was 69.
Mrs. Chavez was born to Joseph and Sarah (Winters) Valdez on November 24, 1948 in Durango. Christine was exceedingly proud to be a local. In May 1967, she married Antonio (Tony) Chavez in a double ceremony with her sister at Sacred Heart Church in Durango. They recently celebrated their 51st anniversary this year.
Christine is survived by her husband of 51 years, Antonio (Tony) Chavez as well as her three children (Sarah, Del and John). She is also survived by her siblings: Vicki Cordova of Arlington, TX, Darlene Jaramillo of Bloomfield, NM and Joseph Valdez of Denver, CO. Additional survivors include 5 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, of whom she was very proud and loved much. She is also survived by multiple nieces, nephews and cousins as well as her aunt, Celina Valdez of Arboles, CO.
Christine was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Joseph who passed in infancy, aunts and uncles who were very dear to her.
Throughout her illness, Christine was encouraged by the support of both friends and family with daily calls, cards or letters and prayers. Christine and her family wish in particular to thank those Individuals who gave of their time repeatedly to lift her spirits: Benny Tucson, Francis Rodriguez, Carol Shubert, Anna Montoya and Kathy Walsh, Mercy Hospice Team, Pastor Billy Crone of Sunrise Bible Church of Las Vegas, Sacred Heart Church clergy and their members, members of the Lydia Tea Group of First Baptist Church of Bayfield. We also want to thank her long time physician, Dr. Krista Ault for her kindness and care. We regret any omissions, but our gratitude is meant for all who cared.
Professionally Christine worked in the hospitality industry as well as for both hospitals (Community and Mercy). Throughout her career, she made many lifelong friends.
Her family will honor Christie's request of no services and she will be cremated. Her cremated remains will be lovingly handled in accordance with her wishes by her family. Condolences may be sent via email to: hospexecl@yahoo.com or an address may be requested for cards.
