Garth David Byington, 66, of Durango passed away due to a longtime battle with prostate cancer on April 15th, 2015, in his home. There will be a “Gathering of Friends,” open house style, on Saturday May 9, 2015 beginning at noon, at Garth’s home.
Garth David was born July 12th, 1948, in Oklahoma City, OK, to Garth and Virginia Byington. David was raised in Oklahoma City and graduated from Southeast High School. After high school he went to University of Oklahoma, after realizing that the only thing in college that he was really good at, was band. He then decided to join the Army before he got drafted. He was in the Army from 1968 until 1971. After Vietnam he was stationed in Ft Carson in Colorado Springs, where he fell in love with Colorado. He and his friend Sandy decided that Colorado Springs just wasn’t the place for them so they drove around Colorado until they found a place that they wanted to live, ending up in Durango. David was in the sheet metal business and met many interesting people along the way, some that he admired greatly.
If you knew David, you knew that he loved his Colorado Rockies, I am not sure if he ever missed a game. He would go to spring training every year and then would watch them on TV every chance he got. David was a kind man however a bit snarky, which of course also made him fun to have a conversation with, or not. He was a great coach, father and friend. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
He is survived by his siblings: Paul Byington, Deanna Manzer and Keith Byington; 1 niece; 3 nephews; his best friend: Sandy Miller, extended family and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to....Hospice of Durango, Cancer research or any veterans programs.
