Obituary for Joel E. Buchanan
Long-time Durango resident Joel E. Buchanan died Friday, April 27, 2012, in Durango. He was 64.
Mr. Buchanan was born November 17, 1947, in Denver, Colo., the son of Horace and Helen (Stewart) Buchanan. He served in the Navy from 1965-1968 during the Vietnam War. He married Alice Ruth McCurry in Farmington, N.M., in 1969. The marriage ended in divorce, and he and Alice were remarried in 1980. That marriage also ended in divorce.
Joel held numerous jobs as a custodian, food preparer, and surveyor. He was also a lineman and he worked at Mercy Hospital.
His family said he enjoyed sitting in the back yard, drinking iced tea and listening to music, and being just ornery. He had a passion for stargazer lilies.
Mr. Buchanan was preceded in death by his father, Horace F. Buchanan, in 1951, and then by his mother, Helen F. Leonardelli in February 2012.
He is survived by his daughter, Tiffany F. Buchanan, of Durango; son, Art Park, of Durango, step-children Dawn Irons of Bloomfield, N.M., and Paul Irons of Chandler, Ariz.; brother, Jay (Launa) Buchanan, of Rifle, Colo.; three granddaughters, and three great-grandbabies.
Cremation has taken place. A private service will be held at a later date.
