Naomi Jean Conrad Carter Brown, a resident of Bayfield since 1956, passed away in Bayfield, CO, on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at the age of 86. Cause of death was incident to age.

Naomi Jean was born February 17, 1925, in Farmington, N.M., the only daughter of Donald Morris and Mary Elizabeth (Koon) Conrad. She was a direct descendant of John and Barbara Goeglein, early German settlers who lived in the area of the Goeglein Gulch Road, near Fort Lewis College. She graduated from Durango High School in 1942. In her early 20’s, Jean and a girlfriend owned the first drive-in restaurant in Durango, where the Big O Tire business is now located.

In May 1947, Naomi married Charles Carter of Dolores, in Aztec, N.M., and they had four daughters. After Charles died in 1963, she managed his Cannon Ball Tour company for a time. In 1965, she married Warren Joe Brown, and they were later sealed in the St. George, Utah, Temple in 1980.

Jean was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April of 1963, and served in many callings. Some of her hobbies have included remodeling homes, traveling, garage sales, and especially gardening.

Jean is survived by her husband, Joe, and children: Connie Collett of Black Canyon City, AZ; Cindy Highland of Bayfield, Terry Lynn Hood of Cortez, Claudia Carter of Bothell, WA; Christy Duran of Bayfield, Bruce Brown of Dayton, Ohio, and Gary, Brad, and Twila Brown of Pagosa Springs. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one beloved sister, Thea (Conrad) Salvador of Hemet, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at the LDS Church in Bayfield. Bishop Edmunds will officiate. At her request, there will be no visitation, and a private interment was previously conducted at the Pine River Cemetery in Bayfield before the service.

Jean suggested that in lieu of flowers, etc., take your loved ones out to dinner.
