Obituary for
Michael "Mickey" Bowman
Michael “Mickey” Bowman, 71, passed away on April 11, 2014, after a long and brave battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mickey was born on July 19, 1942 to Tom and Ruby Bowman in Houston, Texas. He graduated from Jesse Jones High School and attended the University of Houston. Mickey enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp and proudly served his country on both active and reserve duty.
In 1965, he married the love of his life, Nita Wilcox. Their journey together began in Houston but it would eventually bring them and their children to Colorado in 1976.
Mickey began working at the Basin Co-op in Durango in 1978. In the 34 years that he was there, he worked in virtually every department. That experience made him a valuable resource of information for customers. Mickey was a proven and recognized asset for the agricultural, equestrian and civic organizations throughout the four corners region even after retiring in 2012.
Mickey was a man with many passions. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He especially looked forward to his annual fishing trip with his brothers in Rockport. He loved to cheer for the Broncos, Avs, and Rockies. Mickey was a great storyteller. He could always make you laugh with one of his anecdotes, even at his own expense. Mickey was passionate about service not only to his country but also to his church and community. He was very proud to be a founding member of the Piñon Hills Church of Christ in Ignacio, Colorado. Mickey’s greatest passion was for the cherished relationships he had with his friends, family and God.
No matter where he was, you could always count on a smile to be on Mickey’s face. His friendly and positive outlook made it so he never met a stranger.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nita Wilcox Bowman; daughters, Kim Bowman of Houston, Texas and Sheridan Bowman of Ignacio; son Scott Bowman and wife Holly of Ripley, Oklahoma; and four grandchildren, Angelyn Bowman of Ignacio and Michael, Keron, and Colter Bowman of Ripley, Oklahoma; mother Ruby Bowman of Houston, Texas; brothers Ken and wife Susan Bowman of Cypress, Texas and Don Bowman of Houston, Texas; nephew Christopher and wife Shannon Bowman of Cypress, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father Tom Bowman of Houston, Texas.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Durango Cancer Center, Mercy Hospital, and M.D. Anderson for the care that Mickey received during his extended illness. Their compassion was greatly appreciated.
Visitation will be held at Hood Mortuary on Wednesday, April 16 from 5:00– 7:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at 10:30 am in the Fellowship Hall at the Bayfield Church of Christ, 2001 Bayfield Parkway. A fellowship luncheon will be served following the services. Family graveside services will be held in Texas.
