Obituary for
Tyler S. Black
Tyler Scott Black died on Saturday, December 3, 2011, in a plane crash. He was 24.
Tyler was born on October 30, 1987, to parents Richard and Evelyn Black, and older sister Lacey Black, all of Durango. Even from a young age, he possessed a spark and wit that touched many. He was a bright student, and was deeply involved with the band and theatre programs at Durango High School. He was drum major of the Red Pride Marching Band, but also shone on the stage of Durango High School Theatre Troupe 1096. He held many notable roles, from “Smee” in Peter Pan to what was perhaps his most memorable role, “Superman,” in DANCEQUEST. After he graduated from Durango High School in 2005, Tyler upheld strong relationships with many of his friends from band and theatre. He attended Fort Lewis College
from 2005-2007.
He began working at Alpine Bank as a teller in the Three Springs Branch in 2008, and was recently transferred to the downtown location. Known for his unique, and often humorous perspective, he quickly endeared himself to his coworkers who often described him as a “lifer.” He was also loved by his customers, who looked forward to seeing his smiling face and sharing a laugh with each transaction. Tyler loved his job and the people he worked with, whom he considered more friends than coworkers.
An avid sports fan, Tyler followed the Broncos, Rockies, Avalanche, and the Alpine Bank Softball Team with equal levels of passion and commitment. His love of sports was rivaled only by his love of family. Despite a full work and social schedule, Tyler actively maintained close relationships with his extended family. Tyler’s definition of family was not limited. Everywhere he went, he created a sense of closeness and belonging. Tyler always made time to sustain friendships; whether it was a simple phone call or traveling far distances, he made an effort to nurture the active role he played in the lives of all who knew him.
Tyler lived his life to bring joy and laughter to others. He was a source of pride to those that knew him best, and never failed to make everyone around him smile, even at his own expense.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2011, at St. Mark’s Church. An informal gathering will be held at Mutu’s Restaurant following the service. A memorial account has been established at all Alpine Bank locations.
He is survived by parents Richard and Evelyn Black, sister Lacey Black, grandmother Mary Alice Copeland, Bill and Judy Black, Kelly and Alma Black, Linda Knipp and Dave Crawford, Eric and Margaret Copeland, and numerous cousins and second cousins. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, William (Pete) and Deliliah Black and grandfather Fred Copeland.
