Zane M. Bilgrav, long time Durango resident, died at home on May 1, 2015, after a heroic battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.
He married MJ Nuccio on April 7, 1984 in Haleiwa, HI. He is survived by his mother, Joyce of Durango; wife MJ; sons, Cullen and Zane K of Durango; and daughter Kira Burbridge (Cody) of Jourdanton, TX. Also surviving are his brothers; Dyer (Michael), John (Lisa) and sister, Kerri; sister-in-law, Vicki Eddy (Ron); brother-in-law, Vito Nuccio (Marg); as well as numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Zane’s father, Robert and one son, Luke K preceded him in death.
Zane was born January 13, 1955 in Baltimore, MD. He moved to HI in 1978 after graduating with a degree in Marine Biology. There he met and married MJ Nuccio of Denver, CO. Zane and his wife started and directed an outdoor education/adventure business for 15 years. During that time Zane also taught Marine Biology at Hawaii Pacific University and started a scuba education operation as well. Upon returning to CO, Zane continued sharing his passion for education by establishing a scuba operation in Durango and co-founding and directing Durango Mountain Camp for dyslexic youngsters. Zane was a God-ordained teacher, and all who were taught by him were touched by his love and passion for life. "Our lifetime is limited, but our legacy is limitless. "He was, as his wife and son put it, “ the best dad, husband, and friend ever.”
A celebration of Zane’s life will be held at Colorado Timberline Academy on June 12, 2015 at 4 p.m. A pot-luck dinner will follow the celebration. Please bring your own chair.
