Lorelei Barnes

July 25, 1937 — October 15, 2022

Lorelei Irene Self Barnes went to be with her heavenly Father on October 15, 2022 after a short but courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

She was born in Falfa, Colorado on July 25, 1937 into the pioneer family of Raymond G. Self and Edith Morrison Self.

Lorelei spent her childhood being her daddies’ helper on the families Florida Mesa Farm. With her older sister Margaret at her side, they walked three miles to attend school, she graduated from Durango High School in 1954.

She met the love of her life, Larry Barnes, in January 1956 and they married that March. They made their home on a part of the Self Farm and raised their children there.

Lorelei was a lady of many skills, working at the DMV, ASCS, and Florida Mesa Schools. Her most important working role was as bookkeeper and supporter for the family business, Larry Barnes Log Homes.

Family came first to Lorelei and she loved them immensely. She was an avid reader and had a real curiosity for geology, spending many hours hiking through the trees and sagebrush, hunting for unique rocks.
In addition to her parents, Lorelei was preceded in death by her son, Levi.

Lorelei is survived by her husband of 66 years, Larry L. Barnes; daughter, Lori (Elliot) Ott; son, Larry D. (Rebecca) Barnes and sister Margaret Barr. Also surviving are her pride and joy 9 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held for Lorelei on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Spring Creek Hall, 8811 County Road 334, Ignacio, Colorado at 2:00 p.m.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Cami Kinney, Dr. Catherine Cathcart, and the staff at S.W. Oncology. Because of the joy her children and grandchildren brought her, in lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St. Jude’s Hospital or a youth organization of your choice.
