Johnny Barnes,71, of Durango, Colorado passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021. Johnny was born on April 21, 1950, in Durango and resided on the family ranch throughout his life. He graduated from Ignacio School District in 1969, and worked at Ignacio School District, Fort Lewis College, and Durango 9-R School District for a total of 33 years. He saw at least 2 generations go through the 9-R School District.
His passions were ranching, family, friends, and junk collecting. He was a long time, highly respected volunteer for 4-H and was well known for his participation in the Livestock Barn at the La Plata County Fair. He was a member of the St. Columba Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Johnny is remembered as a warm hearted, generous soul, full of joy and laughter and always had a helping hand and a smile for those in need.
He is survived by his wife Barbara of 45 years; his daughters: Donna Barnes, Sandy (Larry) Gurule; Grandchildren: Logan and Bradin Gurule; Sister, Dixie Melton; Sister-in-law, Helen Thurston; Nephews: Ross Melton, Derek Corley, Bill (Tasha) Garmon; Niece, Jennifer McLaughlin and Great Nieces: Isla Corley and Billie Quinn Garmon.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Rue Harland "Si" and Dorothy "Dottie" Barnes; Niece, Rachel Corley; Brothers-in-law: Ken Thurston, Butch Melton, Roy McLaughlin; Sister-in-law Janie Mclaughlin; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and his longtime friend and partner in mischief, Frankie Bellino.
A rosary will be held at St. Columba Catholic Church on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will also be held at St. Columba Catholic Church on Friday, November 19, 2021 at 2 p.m. Graveside service will follow services at Greenmount Cemetery and a reception will follow at La Plata County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall.
In Lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made to La Plata County 4-H, Knights of Columbus, or St. Columba School.
