Robert Lee Baker, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 surrounded by his family.
Known as "Uncle Dud" or "Baker", he was born to Maxwell & Ethel Viola Baker on October 18, 1943 in Colorado Springs. He grew up in the Colorado Springs area and graduated from Whitefield High School. In 1965 he was drafted by the army and served in Vietnam where he received a purple heart.
On July 20, 1968 he married the love of his life, Barbara Rogers of Hesperus. They were married for 42 years when Barbara passed away in 2010. Together they raised two wonderful sons, Tommy and Stacy. Their door was always open and they often had a full house. Robert loved his family - he supported his boys in their rodeo careers and continued the tradition by watching his grandchildren play sports.
Robert spent much of his time away from home working as a heavy equipment mechanic to provide for his family. He worked in such places as Washington, Utah, Georgia, New Mexico, and Colorado. He was a hard worker and made many lifelong friends.
After he retired, he was always on the move - working, doing something in the garage or field, or riding his Harley to Sturgis. He could fix just about anything and his garage was always full with some family, friend, or neighbors' vehicle to be repaired. He was always willing to help his friends and kept his porch open for them to visit.
Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, parents, Maxwell and Viola Baker, brother, Gerald Baker, and nephew, Maxwell Baker.
He is survived by his sons, Tommy (Denise) Baker of Durango and Stacy (Debbie) Baker of Hesperus, brother Johnnie Baker of Dumont, CO, many in-laws, seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A potluck celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 27th at 11:00am at the Baker Residence, 4147 CR 129, Hesperus, Colorado. Friends and family are asked to bring memories of this great man to share.
