Obituary for Iden C. Baker

Southern Ute Tribal member Iden C. Baker passed into the Spirit world on Friday morning, May 6, 2011, at Mercy Regional Medical Center due to an extended illness. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at the Southern Ute Memorial Chapel, 258 Ute Road, Ignacio, with Larry Tucker officiating. Visitation will take place from 9-10 a.m. before the service.

Iden was born May 25, 1949, in Ignacio, Colo. He attended Ignacio High School, and worked for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe in various departments.

Known as “Nig” or “Iky” by his family, Iden was an outdoors man. He loved fishing, traveling and picnicking. Most of all, he loved the time he spent at family celebrations. When Iden turned the big “5-0” a surprise celebration was given in his honor by his niece LeAnn, where he was surrounded by family. In recent years, it was his niece Terena that kept his spirits going, along with the family pets Rowdy, Daisy Mae, Tinka, and Princess, and his cat ML. Whenever his nieces and nephews would return from their travels, they would go to their “Uncle Nig” and tell him of where they had been and what they had seen. He was always happy to hear of their adventures. He encouraged his niece Amber and nephew Anthony to do well in their endeavors.

Iden’s hobbies included collecting buffaloes, doing puzzles, and buying motorcycle memorabilia from the bike rally. According to his mom, he made the best coffee.

Iden is survived by parents Clifford and Sarah of Ignacio; sisters Terry Box of Ignacio, Connie Mae Baker of Ignacio, Ann Blackbird of Lawrence, Kan.; brothers Melvin Baker, Ronnie Baker and Tooley Box, all of Ignacio; his aunt Vida Peabody of Ignacio; other cousins, family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his grandmother Alma Box, uncles Emil Box, James Baker and Eugene Baker; brothers Ted Baker and Weslee Baker; and nephews Ronald Baker and Shonie Baker.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the Ignacio EMT’s in memory of Iden.
