Obituary for
Melvin L. Atwood
Former Abilene, Texas, resident Melvin Lee Atwood, died Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at home in Hesperus, Colo. He was 83.
Mr. Atwood was born July 15, 1928, in Graham, Texas, the son of Lee and Betty Atwood. He attended Abilene Christian University and worked for Lowry Trim Shop before moving to Carlsbad, N.M., where he opened Carlsbad Upholstery in 1955. In 1962 the family moved to Colorado, where Mr. Atwood began to sell insurance and established his own brokerage. He retired in 1998.
He was an active Christian all his life. His family said, "He was our mentor, husband, father, and friend. He will always be in our hearts."
He is survived by his wife, Marie Hunter Atwood, of Hesperus, five daughters: Cynthia Black of Athens, Ala., Teresa Dodd and Angela Oden of Colorado Springs, Rebecca Craddock of Hesperus, and Nancy Hawkins of Frisco, Texas; two sisters, Jerline Pope of Midland, Texas, and Barbara Shelton of Graham, Texas; five sons-in-law; sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Cremation has occurred at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango, Colo. A memorial service was held Jan. 21, 2012, at Northside Church of Christ in Farmington, N.M.
