Margaret E. Atkins
Margaret E. Atkins, 84, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011, in Durango, Colo. No services are planned at this time and cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango.
Marguerite was born July 31, 1927, in Shelby, Mont., the daughter of Henry and Hazel Hankins. She grew up in Shelby. After graduating in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, she married Donald M. Atkins and the young family moved to Durango. While in Durango she was a skilled homemaker and an exceptional baker, having taken multiple grand champion ribbons and awards for her baked entries in the La Plata County Fair. Mrs. Atkins spent her senior years in Ignacio, Colo.
She worked at J.C. Penney’s amongst other jobs from her high school years until retirement. She served as a board member for the Ignacio Sanitation District. Marguerite was a 50-year member of the Animas Valley Grange.
She is survived by her children: Sue Herrera (Joe) of Ignacio, Colo.; Janet Noland (Pat) of Grand Junction, Colo.; and Dale of Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters: Eileen Meyer of Bloomfield, N.M.; Merna Graese of Salem, Ore.; and Bonnie Ake of Anderson, Ind.; grandchildren: Annette Gallegos, Chris Herrera, Abby Clement, Amanda Erkman, Billy Atkins, Alicia Noland, and Josh Atkins, ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her former spouse, Donald M. Atkins, sister Mary Meyer, brother Howard Hankins, and her parents, Henry Hankins and Hazel Rice.
